Get Your Carpet Deep-Cleaned With These Simple Steps

Simple Deep-Clean Carpet Tricks

Carpets seem to be a magnet for hair, dirt, and permanent stains, especially when you have light coloured carpets. There are many products and services available, but they may not always do the trick if you have difficult to treat stains, deeply embedded in the fibers of your light-toned flooring.

Cleaning the carpets yourself may seem daunting, especially with advice that might seem tricky to follow (for example, telling you to rub a solution into the stained area of the carpet without grinding the stain in further). We’ve boiled a lot of the information out there down to these simple steps to make cleaning headache free!

Clean before you start

The point of deep cleaning is to get the deep stains out of the carpet fibres, so your first step should be getting the carpet as clean as possible. Turn your vacuum up to an appropriately powerful setting and vacuum your entire floor, including the areas under tables, chairs, and sofas. If you’re unsure of the job your vacuum has done, consider going over the area twice.

Spot treat the tricky areas

Some parts of the carpet will be more difficult than others, so start on those first. The type of stain will tell you how to treat them:

  • Water soluble stains just need to soak in detergent (avoid using bleach)
  • Grease stains react to heat, so grab a tool such as a hair dryer and dab the fat, oil, or wax with a rag or durable paper towel once warm
  • Glue and other adhesives dissolve using alcohols (rubbing alcohol will do)

Tip: Even on light coloured carpets, don’t use bleach! You’ll have a new type of stain that’s hard to correct when you’re done

Do a test patch

As with any new type of treatment, a test patch will tell you a lot about how the carpet in general will react to your deep cleaning.

Rent a carpet cleaning machine and either clean in bare feet or bag your shoes before you start. Carpet cleaning shouldn’t be technically challenging, but you will need to use some elbow grease to get the job done. Just go slowly and pace yourself so you don’t run out of steam before the job is done! Give yourself lots of time to let the carpet air out before you put the furniture back.
