Depending on where you live in the country, a fan, or an air conditioner may seem like an absolute necessity during the hot summer months. Coming into a home that is the exact same temperature as the outside air is never pleasant, but many people are unaware that their fans and air conditioners may be hurting their air quality. Below are some of the ways that dirty fans and air conditioners affect the air quality in your home or office.
Increased Dust. The main problem with dirty fans and air conditioners is the increased dust they just end up circulating. In exchange for a bit of a breeze, or cooled down air, a dirty fan or air conditioner can simply start to send dust flying around your home or office. You will either end up breathing this dust in, or it will settle and create a dirty, grimy look that you will have to be constantly addressing.
Pet Hair. In addition to spreading around dust particles, dirty fans and air conditions are also terrible for spreading around pet hair and dander. If you are someone who is allergic to cats or dogs, or if you work in an office where there are people who come to work with pet hair on them, which ends up being spread around to other parts of the office, you may be making work life uncomfortable for people.
Odours. Anyone who knows what a dusty old house smells like knows that it's not the ideal air freshener scent. But that is precisely what you are doing when you allow a dirty, dusty fan or air conditioner to do this. It is circulating the smell of dust and grime throughout your home, which you then have to walk around smelling and dealing with all day.
Hard To Breathe. This is especially important for people with breathing problems, including infants, the elderly and asthmatics. If you have people who already have difficulty breathing, or whose lungs are extra sensitive in your home, having air that is clogged with dust and dirt particles because of dirty fans and air conditioners can become more than just a smell and allergy hazard, it can become a serious health hazard and respiratory illness waiting to happen.
Air quality is incredibly important and something that is underestimated by a lot of people. Just because your fan or air conditioning unit is cooling you down, doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't making your life uncomfortable, or at the very least, has the potential to make your life uncomfortable in other ways. If you regularly use a fan, or an air conditioner and you are wondering why you might be experiencing some of the above air quality related problems, it could have a lot to do with the fact that your fan, or air conditioner is circulating dirty, aggravating air around your home or office.
