4 spring cleaning tips for a squeaky clean office

Spring is just around the corner. The winter snow is melting and new plants and flowers will soon be peaking above the ground. With all this new life coming about, you might be inspired to clean out the office, refresh everything, and get ready for the rest of the year.

However, as you look around your office space, this task can seem daunting. So, what is the best way to tackle this job, get cleaned up, and keep your sanity?

Aside from hiring a professional and expert team specializing in office cleaning in Vaughan, there are things you can do to clean your space and the air you breathe, and even help keep your mind from imploding all at the same time.

Make a List, Check It Twice

While this may sound more like something Santa would do, it’s a handy tool to help plan any large project. This approach also applies to cleaning.

Look around your space and make a list, and consider which spaces need to be done, what would your problem areas be, and how you would need to tackle them efficiently.

Check your cleaning supplies. Do you have enough, or should you stock up? Are there some areas you need extra help with, or do you have to ensure the space is empty so you can move furniture around?

When you have your list and can see what needs to be done, divide and conquer! You do not need to do the whole space in one day, especially if it’s a large area with multiple desks and cubicles.

You can take your time and focus on the areas that may need more attention than others. That coffee stain on the carpet in the conference room may require more elbow grease than using Lysol on the counter space and equipment in the copy room.

Once you have your plan and have divided up the space, set a date to make the cleaning happen, especially if there are a lot of employees. Get them involved, as each person can clean their own space. This reduces the time it will take to get every area done.

Start at the Top

Now, we don’t necessarily mean starting at the top of the building on the roof and working down the floors, but more realistically, beginning at the top of the office space, maybe the windows or a shelving unit, and then working down.

One of the most annoying things is cleaning something, which becomes dirty again as you are cleaning something else.

Dust and dirt are no strangers to gravity and cannot resist its pull. Therefore, if you start cleaning things that are higher up, the dust and grime will fall. Then, as you clean lower and lower, everything falls down, and you can just vacuum everything up as it hits the floor.

This prevents you from having to clean your desk repeatedly as you clean the shelves or window sills. Working efficiently instead of harder than you need to is the way to go.

It’s Not Just Your Desk That Could Use a Quick Clean

Cleaning the visible space you, your colleagues, and clients can see is great. The space feels better and becomes more inviting and welcoming, but it doesn’t stop there. Your computer desktop could also use some love and attention.

By routinely backing up files on external drives and deleting files that you no longer need, you can free up the cluttered feel of your drives and desktop, allowing you to focus on the most current and essential aspects of your job.

Even the things you don’t need on a regular basis can be cleaned off onto a USB drive that lives in your desk drawer. This approach further contributes to your spring cleaning efforts.

Using drawer and desk organizers will help you to keep tidy and organized so that you are not just moving clutter from one space to another.

If you still use them, paper files can also be spring-cleaned. Depending on your industry, you may be required to keep certain files or documents for a set time period. However, you can move them to a storage facility for destruction at the end of the time frame.

Ready, Set, and…Check Your Supplies

You are almost ready to start cleaning, but do you have all the cleaning supplies you need?

It’s a good idea to double-check before you begin. Make sure there are enough disinfectant wipes, sprays, and paper towels or microfibre cloths to go around. Can every employee clean their own space without running out?

Do you have enough cleaning products for all the windows? What about the air ducts or desk fans? Do you have a spot cleaner or carpet cleaner for your carpeted areas or rugs?

You don’t want to get deep into the cleaning process and then find that you have run out of something, causing you to stop and run to the store. By the time you come back, you may have lost the momentum to keep going.

While breaks are necessary to hydrate and refuel, if you take too long of a break, you run the risk of stopping altogether.
